October is National Women’s Small Business Month, and the Brookside Shops are celebrating! Throughout the month, we’re recognizing and honoring the many women-owned small businesses and the women entrepreneurs who make Brookside such a special place to shop, dine, work and visit.
Some of Brookside’s oldest and most recognized businesses are women owned. Even more impressive, women-owned businesses continue to thrive here, with many calling Brookside home for 10, 20 and even more than 30 years.

Make a day of celebrating women-owned businesses in Brookside!
Visit participating women-owned businesses throughout the district and pick up a checklist to collect a stamp at each one. The more participating businesses you visit, the more chances you have to win a Brookside Prize Pack valued at more than $500!
It’s a great excuse to revisit your favorites, discover a new business and show your support for the women who make Brookside special. No purchase is necessary.
When you’re finished, simply drop off your completed checklist at one of the participating women-owned businesses. We’ll announce the winner the following week!

You don’t have to spend a dime to support a small business.
Take a few minutes to leave a review, like or follow your favorite women-owned businesses, or share one of their social media posts. A positive review lets a business know that its customers appreciate what it does and can encourage others to visit. Likes, follows and shares help businesses reach new customers and expand their visibility.

Women-Owned Businesses That Stand the Test of Time
Did you know? Building a successful small business takes persistence, hard work and the ability to adapt through changing times. About 20% of U.S. small businesses close within their first year, and only about one-third make it to their tenth anniversary. That makes the longevity of so many women-owned businesses in Brookside something truly worth celebrating.
Brookside has been home to women entrepreneurs for generations. Several women-owned businesses have been part of the Brookside community for 10, 20 and even more than 30 years, becoming neighborhood favorites and, in some cases, institutions known by generations of customers.
Businesses like Brookside Toy & Science, The Corner Candleshop, A Store Named Stuff, Parallel Salon, Brookside Barbershop, Brookside Party Warehouse and Lauren Alexandra have built lasting businesses and strong connections with the Brookside community.
And that tradition continues with a new generation of women entrepreneurs. Recent additions include CRU, Paws & Purrvisions and MAISON by Alexandra Design + Build, while businesses that have joined Brookside in the past five years include heARTbeat Studio, LADYCO, Sierra Winter, EB & Co., The Grove Spa and Jorjy.
Women have also taken ownership of long-established Brookside businesses, including Foo’s Fabulous Frozen Custard, Leopold Gallery + Art Consulting, The UPS Store and BKS Nails, carrying these businesses into their next chapters. Women entrepreneurs are also represented among Brookside’s franchise businesses, including barre3, HomeGrown, Nothing Bundt Cakes and Stretch Zone.
From longtime neighborhood institutions to the newest businesses on the block, these women are building on Brookside’s history while creating its future. Their longevity, creativity, determination and commitment are a big part of what makes the Brookside Shops such a special place to do business—and an even more special place to shop, dine and visit.
