The 2025 Parade Grand Marshal is none other than Steve Kraske, a well-respected figure in Kansas City journalism, public radio, and education. As the Executive Producer and Host of KCUR’s Up to Date talk show, as well as a Professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), Steve has earned a reputation for his commitment to the community, thoughtful dialogue, and dedication to uncovering important issues.
For 23 years, Up to Date has been the go-to source for in-depth discussions on a wide array of topics, from local and regional concerns to national issues. Steve has been at the helm of the show since its inception, bringing listeners insightful conversations with newsmakers, influencers, educators, business leaders, and other key figures. The topics covered on Up to Date span politics, government, economics, health, education, planning and design, and entertainment—issues that deeply affect the lives of residents in the Greater Kansas City region and Brookside. We’re also grateful that Brookside business owners and experts, and the history of Brookside have been featured topics on Up to Date over the years. Beyond Steve’s coverage of Brookside, many Brookside businesses are long-time KCUR supporters, reaching a large audience supportive and loyal to Kansas City and local, small businesses.
When asked about his role as host, Steve shared, “When I host Up to Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes, and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers.”
Steve's career in journalism spans more than three decades, having worked for over 30 years at The Kansas City Star as a columnist and political correspondent. His extensive experience includes covering every president since Gerald Ford, 13 national political conventions, the Iowa caucuses, and a range of political races, including governor, U.S. Senate, and Congressional elections. His deep understanding of the political landscape in Kansas City and beyond has made him a trusted voice in the community.
In addition to his work in journalism, Steve has also been a dedicated educator. He has been an affiliate faculty member at UMKC’s Center for Digital and Public Humanities and has taught journalism at the university for over a decade. His passion for mentoring the next generation of journalists is reflected in his commitment to education and his work as a faculty member at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
His career achievements have not gone unnoticed. In 2019, 435 Magazine named him one of the 50 most powerful people in Kansas City, a testament to his influence and impact on the region. Steve's work as both a journalist and educator has left an indelible mark on Kansas City, making him a fitting choice for Grand Marshal of the 2025 Parade.
Reflecting on his career in radio, Steve shared, “I got a call out of the blue one day from then-news director Frank Morris who asked if I would be interested in hosting a show. I didn't think I had the time, but thought it over and decided to give it a shot. Now, more than 23 years later, I'm glad I did.”
Steve Kraske’s contributions to journalism, education, and the Kansas City community are immeasurable, and his role as Grand Marshal is a well-deserved recognition of his dedication and service. Congratulations, Steve!
